Project Description: The project involves construction of 4 viaducts 280 to 320 feet long, comprising 2 frames and 7 to 9 spans with middle hinges. They are built as 20-foot widening to existing roadway with complicated horizontal and vertical curves. They consist of 20-inch reinforced slabs on grade supported by 24 inch CIDH piles with 4-foot galvanized pin rebar cage at top of piles. Rebar reinforcements are predominantly epoxy-coated and the deck is treated with methacrylate and waterproofing materials and overlain with hot mix asphalt concrete and fog seal.

The overhead truss spans vary from 100ft to 140 ft. CIDH concrete pile has been used for the foundation. Due to high level of ground water and soil caving potential, the slurry displacement method with temporary steel casing have been used to build the foundation. The diameter of CIDH piles on the shoulder is 5 ft, and the depth of the pile is 63 ft, typically. Due to high volume of traffic on Hwy 80, the allowable time for the lane closure is very constraint, also construction safety, scheduling, drilling methods to handle the ground water and soil caving are other critical factors.
